British Council Villaviciosa

Quote of the Week

If I was House's friend, I would hate it. How he so resolutely refuses to be happy or take the kind-hearted road. But we don't always like morally good people, do we?
Hugh Laurie

Situated in Calle Santa Ana in the historical heart of Villaviciosa de Odón, less than five minutes away from the castle.

Poetry Corner

Each week we will present a sample of some verse from classics to talented amateurs. If you are a budding writer, send us a sample of your work and we will publish it.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,

Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,

Silence the pianos and with muffled drum

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead

Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,

Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,

Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,

My working week and my Sunday rest,

My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;

Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;

Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.

For nothing now can ever come to any good.

W.H Auden

Homework helpdesk

Having trouble with your homework or is there a word you need to know or a point of grammar which just seems to evade explanation? If so, then post a comment on the blog and we'll try to answer your queries as quickly and as comprehensively as we can.

Q? What's the difference between "due to" and "owing to"?

Answer There are no differences in meaning between the two and they are mostly used synonymously by the majority of people, although a strict grammarian would tell you that "Owing to" should only be used at the beginning of a sentence and "Due to" within the sentence.

hello!I have a little problem: often I can't remember the words and the vocabulary I learn in English class.Can you help me, please?

Hello (again?) Anonymous,

If I were you, I would look through my work on a daily basis for just a couple of minutes. That way, the vocabulary and the lesson will always be fresh in your memory. If you do this, there will also be no need to spend a week revising for your exams.
Another good way not to forget vocabulary is to put it to use...try and work the new vocabulary into work that you do in class, or written homework. In this way, you will also understand it better and improve your working knowledge of English, as well as communicate more and better.

Hope it helps!

Showcase

Some of you may remember Soniya Amrit Patel who worked at this centre a while ago. This is just some of her extraordinary artwork. We'd like to showcase the work of teachers and students alike on this, our cultural blog. In my opinion, it puts the Turner prize candidates to shame, and redeems some pride for modern art. To see what I mean, click on the link below to see an exhibition by last year's British Turner Prize aspirant, Tracey Emin.

http://www.britishcouncil-venice.org/

Jonathan Paige from the Valencia centre is also a talented, and very modest artist, who apart from painting, music making and teaching is also recently a father. Where does he get the time?

And Jaime Aguilar Gallego from 5SD here displays his fantasy art, based on the B-Movies of the 1950's.

..........................................................................................................

And last but not least, our very own Jordan Morton, newcomer to the centre, is quite handy with a pencil himself.

Things you should and shouldn't learn at school

When I was at school I learnt many things that had nothing to do with functioning in the real world and didn't learn many of the essentials, practical things like learning how to change a car battery, fix a light switch or a toilet cistern. Things like filling in your tax returns would be a whole lot more useful than learning which King got an arrow in his eye.

What do you think?

What did you learn at school which you think was useless?

What would you like to have learned?
